My comfort food is bread and egg. I like oranges a lot. You could probably kidnap me with a pack of juice. And I’ll watch any sci-fi movie with enthusiasm, no matter how ridiculous the plot is. These are a few of my favourite things. Things I like to tell the people close to me.
There are weeks that go by where I don’t feel pleased with life and existence. And in those times, I hope the people I love will be there for me. But it’s impossible for them to do that, if they don’t know how. This means that I might find myself needing them, but they’d have no way to come through for me.
So at random times, I tell them what my favourite things to eat and drink are. The kind of movies I like. How I prefer to be spoken to. The kind of things that please me.
When I feel a surge of joy from an activity, I tell them. I explain how I’m feeling, and what I think was the source.
No one knows you better than yourself. Unfortunately, this means that the people around you may sometimes not be there for you in the way that you might need them to be. This is why it’s important to teach them how to love you. Remind them, often, of the things that spark joy in you.
So on a bad day, someone can say; “hey, I bought you some food from that place you like, and I found this book I think you’ll enjoy. Today may not be a great day, but I hope these things you love will cheer you up”.
